Mascletàs of Alicante 2026: calendar, best spot and tips

Every day from 1-24 June 2026 at 14:00, the Plaza de los Luceros in Alicante vibrates with a mascletà. 100-150 kg of gunpowder exploding rhythmically for 7-8 minutes: the most physical pyrotechnic show that exists.

What is a mascletà and why is it different?

The Valencian mascletà is a DAYTIME pyrotechnic show based on gunpowder and RHYTHM — not lights. Hundreds of masclets (gunpowder firecrackers) are mounted connected by fuse. The idea is to create a rhythmic sequence that builds to a deafening final "earthquake". The shockwaves are felt physically in the chest, lungs and ears. A Valencian cultural heritage unique in the world.

When and where

Plaza de los Luceros, central Alicante. Every day from 1-24 June at 14:00 (except occasional rainy day or reprogrammed). The 24 June one, Saint John day, is the most important. The pyrotechnic firms competing each year make different mascletàs — the Mascletà Contest one (specific days) is the one specialised national press attends.

Best spot to see it

The plaza itself fills 1-2 hours in advance. For a good spot: arrive before 13:00. To live the "physical thunder": be in the front rows of Calle Maissonave or Foglietti. For calm with view: balconies of cafés in the area (book days ahead, they usually ask for minimum consumption). NEVER bring small children or people with pacemakers.

How to get there from El Campello

TRAM line 1 towards Alicante to Mercado or Luceros stop (25-28 minutes from Venta Lanuza). Leave at 12:30 gives you plenty of time. DO NOT go by car: central Alicante is jammed in June, and from 13:30 they close access to Luceros. Return: TRAM runs normally after.

Consejos prácticos

  • MANDATORY: earplugs. Sold at pharmacies for €1-2. Without them, ears ring 1-2 days.
  • No pets. Animals suffer greatly with the mascletà.
  • No children under 5 in front line. Take the child to a distant area (50-100 m) if you want to expose them.
  • Wear a hat if in front line: small gunpowder remains fall from the air.
  • After the mascletà the plaza takes 20 min to clear. Do not be in a hurry.
