What is the Carmen festival?

The Virgin of Carmen is patron of fishermen and sailors throughout Spain. El Campello, a traditional fishing village, celebrates her with special intensity on 16 July. The fishermen brotherhoods take the Virgin in procession through the port streets, then put her on a boat and parade her over the sea accompanied by the whole fishing and recreational fleet of the port.

The maritime procession (evening of the 16th)

Around 19:00 the procession leaves through the streets of the maritime quarter (Carrer la Mar). The Virgin arrives at the port around 20:00 — she is placed on a decorated boat. The whole fleet (40-60 fishermen and private boats) gathers at the port mouth. The maritime procession lasts 1 hour in front of the coast, visible from the entire central beach. At sunset fireworks are launched from the breakwater.

How to see it from the area

If you stay in El Campello, the spectacle is literally 5 minutes on foot. Recommendation: walk to the port around 18:30 to see the procession leave by land, then go up to the central beach to see the maritime procession (better frontal view). Fireworks are visible from the entire seafront promenade area.

The rest of the programme

Day 15 evening: maritime mass and brotherhood dinner. Day 16 dawn: the "rondalla" tours sailor houses with traditional music. Day 16 morning: solemn mass at the church. Day 16 evening-night: maritime procession + fireworks + open-air dance at the port square until dawn.
