Bonfires of Saint John in Alicante 2026: programme, mascletàs and how to see them
From 20-24 June 2026, Alicante celebrates Les Fogueres de Sant Joan: artistic monuments, daily mascletàs in Plaza de los Luceros, Ninot parade, the Cremà burning night and fireworks on Postiguet beach.
What are the Bonfires of Saint John?
Les Fogueres de Sant Joan is the biggest festival in Alicante, declared of International Tourist Interest. Each neighbourhood erects a hoguera (foguera) — a satirical sculpture of cardboard, wood and papier-mâché up to 20 metres tall — burned the night of 24 June. The festival blends pagan summer solstice traditions with Christian ones. 200 bonfires rise every year in the city.
Daily mascletàs in Plaza de los Luceros
Every day from 20-24 June at 14:00 there is a mascletà in Plaza de los Luceros. It is a pyrotechnic show of gunpowder — not lights — where 100-150 kg of powder explodes rhythmically for 7-8 minutes. The physical sensation in your chest is what you go for. Free, open access, arrive 30 min early.
The nights: bands, racós and Ninot parade
Every night neighbourhoods turn entire streets into racós — community open kitchens — with dinner, music and dancing open to passers-by. The Ninot Parade on 21 June crosses the centre with thousands of barraquetes (groups) in period dress. Music until 6 am is normal.
The Cremà (night of 24-25 June)
The culmination: on the night of the 24th, after fireworks at El Postiguet beach, firefighters spray the bonfires with water (the banyà) and they all burn together. The 200 bonfires burn for an hour. The most emotional spectacle of the year in Alicante.
Consejos prácticos
- Get to central Alicante by TRAM line 1 from El Campello (25 min direct). DO NOT go by car, the whole centre is closed.
- For the Luceros mascletà arrive between 13:00 and 13:30. Wear earplugs (your ears will ring for 2 days otherwise).
- The 24th Cremà is best viewed from a neighbourhood bonfire, not the centre (too crowded). Ask a local which bonfire is nearby.
- Bring water, closed shoes and NEVER touch the bonfire ropes/barriers.
- Extreme heat after the Cremà ignites: stand at least 20 m from each burning bonfire.
